Statement on Richard Kelly Kemick's story "The Most Human Part of You"

Oct. 4, 2017

Maisonneuve regrets to inform its readers that Richard Kelly Kemick's short story "The Most Human Part of You" is no longer a finalist for the Writers' Trust/McClelland & Stewart Journey Prize and will no longer be included in the forthcoming Journey Prize Anthology. The story was removed from consideration for the prize after striking similarities between his story and "The Dog of the Marriage" by Amy Hempel were discovered. A joint statement has been released by the Writers' Trust and McClelland & Stewart. Maisonneuve is deeply distressed by the discovery of similarities between the two stories.

Given the circumstances, Maisonneuve has removed the short story from our website, and the issue in which the story originally appeared will no longer be available.

The work that appears in Maisonneuve undergoes a robust fact-checking process, and our staff is committed to ensuring that the work that appears in the magazine's pages is original and fully sourced. Maisonneuve acted immediately and in good faith to find a solution to the problem identified with the short story, and we are working to further improve our internal controls.
